A Memorable Evening in Vaughan

He emphasized the importance of preserving the Tamil language and culture, acknowledging the dedication of Tamil parents and grandparents in ensuring their children receive a quality education. Minister Lecce highlighted the establishment of Tamil Heritage Month by the Progressive Conservative Party, a testament to the community’s influence and importance. He also honored Vijay Thanigasalam, the first Tamil elected to Ontario’s legislature, for his remarkable journey from refugee to minister and his ongoing contributions to the Tamil community.

Minister Thanigasalam expressed his pride in the Tamil community and their achievements. Minister Thanigasalam also recognized the community’s resilience and dedication, which have been key in establishing Tamil Heritage Month and passing significant legislation like the Tamil Genocide Education Week Act (Bill 104).   2. Acknowledging History Makers: Honoring Vijay Thanigasalam as a pioneer for Tamils in      Ontario’s legislature and recognizing Minister Lecce’s long-standing support for Tamil causes, including his role in boycotting the Commonwealth Games in Colombo due to human rights concerns.
  3. Community Engagement: The event showcased the strong relationship between the      Tamil community and various levels of government, emphasizing the community’s active participation in civic life.
  4. Future Initiatives: The Tamil Heritage Month celebrations were a testament to the community’s vibrant cultural presence, with plans for future events, including a Tamil community center in Ontario, further solidifying the community’s roots and contributions.
